Film Synopsis
The film begins with an unknown character drawing a box around a young girl in chalk. The girl is obviously from a good, conventional middle- class family as she is neat and tidy and dressed in nice clothes. The girl is sitting on the floor watching the road. She is about eight years old. She watches the road as if waiting for something to happen. She sits a distance away from the road in between two high walls. The girl then begins to play with the chalk line infront of her, before she licks her finger and washes the chalk away. In a playful way she jumps over the line and, seeing a passing car, she runs to it, grinning, showing that she has been waiting for this car to arrive. When she gets to the road however, and the car isn’t there, she stands on her tip- toes and strains her neck to see if the car has parked up. The road where she lives is quite quiet and peaceful, although not desolate and isolated. Her facial expression changes from confusion back to excitement as she notices a car of the same colour and runs to it. To show that she had lead a sheltered life, the girl is shown to have difficulty when crossing the road. As if mechanically, the girl holds out her hand, ready for a routine hand to guide her across the road. She then does not really look or listen, rather she gingerly glances one way and runs. The car that she is running to then continues to drive and pulls around a corner. The girl runs to follow. The car has gone. the girl goes back to cross the road and automatically hold out her hand. Only this time, somebody does take it. the person is never revealed and they guide the girl across the road and into a different car, puts her in and rives away from where she lives. The girl never reacts and everything throughout the scene is smooth and calm.
